From the working man’s uniform to a sartorial statement, jeans have come a long way. But, with such a plethora of colours, textures, washes and styles, how do you narrow it down to that perfect pair? Here we decode the DNA of denim.
Anti Fit
Baggy around the hips and the waist, this rebellious pair of denims becomes narrower as it goes downward.
Fit And Flare
A successor of the bell-bottoms, this style is snug till the knees and then flares out. With the ongoing 70s revival, it’s having a major moment right now.
Motorcycle
Typically straight fit and baggy to allow room for movement (and your riding boots), motorcycle jeans pride themselves on abrasion resistance. Look for the ones with zippered outer pockets – these tend to be more utilitarian.
Boyfriend
A hot favourite in the anti-fit variety, boyfriend jeans are typically cropped or rolled up at the ankles, and give a super androgynous look.
Cigarette
Unlike skinnies that taper closer to the ankle, these tend to remain straight from the knee down, and bunch up at the bottom as a result.
Dad Jeans
Loose, nonchalant and mostly straight, this rendition is the most normcore of them all.
Cut-Offs
The original uniform of the hipsters and cool kids, cut-offs are shorts that are literally cut off just below the butt. They are typically DIY, complete with raw, unfinished edges.
Mom Jeans
Mom jeans rest high on the waist so as to accentuate your butt. Unlike dad jeans, this pair is slightly tapered and ends above the ankle.
Stone Wash
The original acid wash! Back in the 70s, the worn feel was achieved by washing the jeans with pumice in a rotating drum or with the use of chemicals.
Unwashed
Denim in the raw, original form that hasn’t been subjected to any treatment – perfect for those looking for a pair that will age gracefully with them.
Selvedge
It refers to the red thread surrounded by two white threads at the edge of the fabric that keeps it from unravelling. What makes this style coveted is the fact that it is woven on old-fashioned looms and is considered the best quality of denims.
Distressed
Also called ripped jeans, this kind of denim bears signs of being beaten and bruised. You can now buy pre-distressed jeans that are faded, frayed and torn at all the right places, giving that ‘worn out’ effect.
Sandblasted
Jeans that have been smoothed out and textured by forcing abrasive sand particles across it at high speed.
Dip-Dyed
Recently popularized by fast fashion brands, this style is sought after for its ombré effect. The lower half is typically bleached and/or dipped in colour.
Patchwork
Like colour blocking, but with contrasting shades of denim sewn together.
Chambray
Technically speaking, chambray is a fabric with a white weft and coloured warp. Colloquially speaking, it’s the lighter, more summer-friendly version of the cult fabric.
