How to read and interpret your Credit Information Report (CIR)

We are all familiar with the fear and anxiety that we feel when applying for a loan. After all, it’s the lender who decides whether we can own our dream home, our first car, or whether our children can pursue quality higher education. In short, the probability of a better life depends on the lender’s decisions.

While there are many factors that affect your loan application, the most important factors are your Credit Score, your Credit Information Report (CIR) and your income. Currently, almost all banks and financial institutions access your Credit Score to evaluate and approve your loan application. Since your Credit Score is a very important part of the loan application process and is derived from your Credit Information Report (CIR), it is very important that you understand your CIR thoroughly.

What exactly does your CIR contain?

The CIR, in addition to your Credit Score, has 5 sections. This article covers the first three sections contained in your CIR; the latter two- which are closely monitored by credit institutions- will be covered next week.

1. Personal Information
This section provides the lender your name, date of birth, gender, identifying number (e.g. PAN, Voter ID or Passport Number, etc.). Go through this information to ensure key identifiers such as PAN are mentioned correctly.

2. Contact Information
Your addresses and telephone numbers are provided in this section. Up to 4 addresses are provided on the CIR. Both the Personal and Contact Information sections provide details that indicate who the information on that CIR pertains to.

3. Employment Information
The employment section provides the lender with your monthly or annual income details as reported by our members. The reported income is generally the figure you declared during loan application and not necessarily the updated one.
